Solar Solutions in Burundi: Technological Adaptation and Economic/Environmental Benefits Analysis

Abstract

Solar energy solutions are gaining traction in Burundi as a viable alternative to traditional off-grid power sources. A mixed-methods approach combining qualitative case studies with quantitative data analysis to evaluate the adoption patterns and impact of solar energy systems in selected rural areas of Burundi. Solar panels are being installed at a rate of approximately 50% per year, with significant reductions in electricity costs for households compared to kerosene lamps. Concurrently, there is a notable decrease in deforestation due to reduced charcoal use. The adoption of solar energy solutions presents substantial economic and environmental advantages, although challenges such as initial investment and grid integration remain. Encourage government subsidies for solar equipment purchases and establish community-based solar power cooperatives to facilitate wider adoption in Burundi's off-grid villages.
