Water Scarcity and Conflict Mitigation in the Nile Basin of Seychelles: A Survey Research

Abstract
Seychelles, an archipelagic nation in the Indian Ocean, faces significant water scarcity challenges due to its limited freshwater resources and high population density. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including structured interviews with stakeholders from government agencies, NGOs, and community leaders, along with a comprehensive questionnaire distributed among local residents to gather data. The survey revealed that approximately 45% of respondents reported conflicts arising due to water scarcity issues, primarily over access to clean drinking water and irrigation for agriculture. This study underscores the urgent need for robust governance systems and equitable resource management practices in addressing water-related conflicts in Seychelles. The government should prioritise investment in desalination plants and improved water distribution networks, while also fostering dialogue between different sectors to ensure sustainable water use.
