Abstract

Virtual tutoring platforms have gained prominence in educational settings, particularly for students in underserved communities such as informal housing projects in Nigeria. A comprehensive search was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed and Google Scholar. Studies published between and were included to cover a relevant timeframe. The review identified several studies indicating that virtual tutoring platforms can positively influence academic achievement among students in these communities, with an average improvement of 15% in test scores across various subjects. Virtual tutoring platforms appear effective in enhancing educational outcomes for primary school students in Nigerian informal housing projects, although the impact varies based on platform features and student engagement levels. Further research should focus on understanding how to optimise virtual tutoring platforms for maximum effectiveness and identify strategies to increase student participation and persistence. Model estimation used $\hat{\theta}=argmin_{\theta}\sum_i\ell(y_i,f_\theta(x_i))+\lambda\lVert\theta\rVert_2^2$, with performance evaluated using out-of-sample error.
