Abstract

Urban air quality monitoring campaigns have become increasingly important in South Africa to address public health issues and environmental sustainability. The study employed qualitative research methods including participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions to gather data from young people aged 15-24 who participated in the campaign. Youth participants showed a significant interest (80%) in air quality monitoring campaigns, with themes of environmental awareness and community health emerging as key topics. There was a notable increase in youth engagement over two years, correlating with improved public understanding of air pollution risks and benefits of clean air initiatives. Further research should explore the long-term impact on policy implementation and community action, alongside strategies for increasing youth participation in environmental monitoring programmes.
