Abstract

In rural Malawi, access to sustainable toilet facilities is limited, leading to environmental degradation and health issues. Qualitative data collection through interviews and participatory observations were conducted among 50 randomly selected households in four rural communities. Participants reported a significant improvement in cleanliness (85% agreed) and a reduction in open defecation (72%), reflecting positive behavioural changes. The eco-friendly toilet solutions have shown promising results in enhancing community hygiene and waste management practices. Further implementation should include education on proper use of facilities and sustainable waste disposal methods to sustain the improvements observed.
