Ethical Foundations in Egyptian Archaeological Excavations and Repatriation Practices: An African Perspective
Abstract
This study examines ethical considerations in archaeological excavations and repatriation practices within Egyptian cultural contexts. A structured survey was conducted among a diverse group of scholars, policymakers, and community leaders from various disciplines including history, anthropology, and law. The survey aimed at understanding current practices, ethical dilemmas, and potential improvements in archaeological procedures. The findings indicate that there is significant variation in how ethical guidelines are applied across different regions within Egypt, with a notable emphasis on safeguarding cultural heritage sites over repatriation of artifacts to their original contexts. There is a need for more inclusive and culturally sensitive approaches to archaeological excavations and repatriation practices in Egypt. Recommendations include the establishment of regional ethics committees, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and incorporating community input into decision-making processes.
