Abstract

Sustainable agriculture practices are crucial for smallholder farmers in Malawi's Central Region to improve food security and environmental sustainability. Ethnographic research methods were employed, including participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions with a sample size of 50 smallholder farmers. Farmers predominantly adopted intercropping (72%) to enhance soil fertility and biodiversity. Limited access to sustainable inputs was reported as the most significant challenge. The study highlights the importance of farmer education and support in promoting sustainable agricultural practices among smallholder farmers. Policy makers should invest in training programmes and provide subsidies for sustainable agriculture inputs to facilitate wider adoption.
