Abstract

Urban sprawl in Kano City, Nigeria is a significant phenomenon affecting its urban planning and management practices. The research employed participant observation, semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders, and document analysis to gather data from various sources within Kano City’s peri-urban areas. Urban sprawl in Kano City has led to a significant increase (35%) in impervious surfaces, which exacerbates water runoff issues, affecting the city's water resources management strategies. The study underscores the urgent need for integrated urban planning and sustainable land use practices to mitigate the adverse effects of urban sprawl on water resources. Local government authorities should implement policies that encourage green infrastructure projects and promote community-led initiatives for water resource conservation.
