Abstract

Urban waste management in Lagos informal settlements faces significant challenges due to inadequate infrastructure and limited government resources. A mixed-methods approach combining surveys, interviews with stakeholders, and observations was employed to gather data from ten informal settlement communities across Lagos. Public-Private Partnerships have shown a moderate adoption rate of waste management techniques, particularly in the areas of waste segregation and recycling. Key themes include community engagement, financial incentives, and technical support as facilitators for successful PPPs. While initial efforts are promising, ongoing challenges such as community resistance to new practices and limited funding remain significant obstacles to widespread adoption. Strengthening community involvement through education and training programmes, exploring alternative funding sources, and ensuring consistent technical support are recommended for future PPPs in Lagos informal settlements.
