Microfinance and Agricultural Ventures among Newly Employed Women Farmers in Tanzania, 2009
Abstract
Microfinance has gained prominence in supporting agricultural ventures among smallholder farmers globally. However, its impact on newly employed women farmers in Tanzania remains underexplored. Qualitative research methods were employed, including semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of newly employed women farmers who had received microfinance support in Tanzania between and . A key theme identified was the significant role played by microfinance in enabling these women to diversify their farming activities, particularly through the introduction of new crop varieties and improved livestock management techniques. The findings suggest that microfinance not only provided financial resources but also facilitated knowledge transfer and innovation among the participants. Policy makers should consider integrating support for agricultural innovations into existing microfinance programmes to enhance their effectiveness in rural areas.
