Health Systems Resilience in Eswatini's Epidemic Response: A Survey Analysis
Abstract
In response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Eswatini (Swaziland), healthcare systems across Africa encountered significant challenges and demonstrated varying degrees of resilience. The research employs a mixed-methods approach involving both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with healthcare professionals. Data was collected through an online survey targeting medical staff in primary care facilities. Findings indicate that while the health system's infrastructure largely remained intact, there were notable disparities in access to personal protective equipment (PPE) across different regions. The analysis reveals a nuanced picture of resilience where certain aspects of the healthcare system performed exceptionally well, whereas others faced substantial challenges. Recommendations include strengthening PPE supply chains and enhancing training programmes for healthcare workers in underserved areas to improve overall health outcomes during future outbreaks.
