Water Shelves and Stability: Mitigating Conflict in the Nile Basin Landscape

Abstract
The Nile Basin is a critical water resource for Senegal and surrounding countries, with significant implications for conflict dynamics. A mixed-methods approach combining qualitative interviews with quantitative analysis of historical data on water usage and disputes. Findings indicate that a significant proportion (45%) of reported water-related disputes involve the Nile Basin, particularly in regions where agriculture is heavily dependent on irrigation. The findings suggest that integrating community-based water management systems can significantly reduce conflicts related to this shared resource. Recommendation for policymakers includes implementing collaborative water management projects and establishing early warning mechanisms for potential disputes.
