Abstract

Urban informal settlements in Cairo face significant agricultural risks due to climate variability and urbanization pressures. A mixed-method approach was employed, including surveys (n=150) and policy document analysis to understand farmers' needs and insurance schemes effectiveness. Among the surveyed households, 42% reported increased crop insurance coverage compared to previous years, with higher uptake among female-headed households and those with better education levels. The findings suggest that targeted interventions could further enhance insurance accessibility and uptake in urban informal settlements. Policy makers should prioritise outreach programmes for underrepresented groups and evaluate the impact of subsidies on farmer participation.
