Telecare Services Impact on Elderly Patients with Dementia in Sub-Saharan Africa's Urban Areas: A Meta-Analysis Study from Djibouti

Abstract

Telecare services are increasingly being implemented to support elderly patients with dementia in urban areas of Sub-Saharan Africa, including Djibouti. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using electronic databases to identify relevant studies. Studies were included based on predefined criteria, including patient population, intervention type (telecare), and outcome measures. Data extraction and synthesis were performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A total of 12 eligible studies were included in this meta-analysis, covering a combined sample size of 345 elderly patients with dementia. The analysis revealed that telecare services significantly improved patient care outcomes compared to standard care, as indicated by an effect size of d = 0.68 (95% CI: 0.28-1.07). The findings suggest that telecare services can be effective in improving the management and quality of life for elderly patients with dementia in Djibouti's urban areas. Telecare service providers should consider standardising their protocols to ensure consistency and effectiveness across different settings, while healthcare policymakers should invest in training programmes for caregivers who are providing telecare services.
