Community-Based Natural Resource Management in Botswana: Successes and Challenges
Abstract
Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) in Botswana exemplifies a collaborative approach to managing wildlife resources and landscapes. A comprehensive literature review was conducted using academic databases and grey literature sources related to CBNRM in Botswana. The review identified a significant proportion (45%) of surveyed communities reported increased wildlife sightings and vegetation recovery, with some areas showing a 10% increase in elephant population over five years. CBNRM has been successful in enhancing biodiversity and community well-being but faces challenges related to resource distribution and enforcement issues. Enhanced monitoring mechanisms and improved stakeholder collaboration are recommended to address ongoing challenges effectively.
