Abstract

Drought is a recurring challenge in northern Senegal’s irrigation zones, affecting smallholder farmers’ crop yields and livelihoods. A mixed-method approach was employed, including surveys, focus group discussions, and interviews with 120 farmers across four irrigation zones. Farmers reported a significant preference for mulching (65%) over other techniques like drought-resistant crop varieties (30%). While farmers show interest in adopting various drought tolerance methods, mulching remains the most popular due to its perceived ease of implementation and cost-effectiveness. Investment in mulching technologies and training programmes should be prioritised to enhance smallholder resilience against drought.
