Afrofuturism as a Discourse for Shaping Kenyan African Futures Analyses
Abstract
Afrofuturism is a contemporary cultural movement that explores African futures through speculative fiction, art, and activism, often critiquing present-day realities while envisioning alternative possibilities. The analysis draws upon existing literature and case studies that utilise Afrofuturist frameworks to examine Kenyan policy landscapes and cultural narratives related to land rights, urbanization, and environmental conservation. A key theme identified is the use of Afrofuturism in critiquing current patterns of resource exploitation and advocating for more equitable and sustainable development pathways. Afrofuturism offers a valuable tool for envisioning alternative futures that can influence policy debates, particularly regarding land rights reform and environmental protection strategies. Policy makers should consider incorporating Afrofuturist perspectives in their planning processes to foster more inclusive and sustainable development trajectories.
