Digital Preservation Strategies in West African Cultural Heritage: A Mixed Methods Analysis in Senegal
Abstract
Digital preservation has become increasingly important in protecting cultural heritage in the digital age. However, little research exists on its application in West Africa specifically. The study combines qualitative interviews with local stakeholders and quantitative surveys of heritage sites. Data was collected through participant observation and secondary research. A notable finding is the significant proportion (70%) of cultural heritage sites that have implemented digital preservation strategies, indicating a growing awareness among practitioners. Digital preservation has proven effective in safeguarding West African cultural heritage, with particular success in Senegal. However, challenges remain regarding resource allocation and technical support. Further investment is recommended to enhance the digitization process and provide more training for local communities and institutions. digital preservation, cultural heritage, Senegal, mixed methods
