African Universities' Role in Knowledge Production and Dissemination: An Action Research Study in Zambia
Abstract
In Zambia, African universities play a crucial role in knowledge production and dissemination, particularly within the field of African Studies. An action research approach was employed, involving interviews with key stakeholders including academics, students, and policymakers. Data were collected through surveys and focus group discussions conducted in universities across Zambia. Findings indicate that while there is a growing emphasis on local knowledge integration into curricula, resources for this purpose are limited, particularly at smaller institutions. The study concludes that despite challenges, African universities have the potential to significantly enhance their contribution to Zambian and broader African academic discourse through increased investment in local research and education efforts. Recommendations include increasing funding for projects focusing on indigenous knowledge systems, training programmes for academics to incorporate local perspectives into teaching materials, and fostering collaborative networks between universities and community organizations.
