Youth Identity and Political Participation in Urban Nigeria: An Action Research Study
Abstract
Youth in urban Nigeria face significant challenges related to identity formation and political participation, influenced by socio-economic factors such as unemployment and inadequate access to education. An action research approach was employed, involving qualitative interviews with urban youths (N=50) supplemented by focus group discussions and case studies from existing civic engagement programmes. Urban youth identified a strong sense of alienation due to limited economic opportunities, leading to low political participation rates. However, community development projects showed promise in fostering more inclusive political identities. The study underscores the importance of integrating identity-based interventions into urban development strategies to enhance political engagement among young people. Policy makers should prioritise youth empowerment programmes that address economic disparities and promote social inclusion within urban governance structures.
