Online Job-Matching Applications' Impact on Female Microlenders in Kigali, Rwanda: An Analysis of Employment Opportunities Creation
Abstract
Online job-matching applications have gained traction in Rwanda's economy, particularly for female microlenders who often face challenges in securing employment opportunities. A systematic search strategy was employed, including databases like PubMed, Google Scholar, and specific Rwanda-focused academic journals. Studies published between and were considered, with a focus on qualitative and mixed-method studies that reported data on the employment outcomes of female microlenders using online job-matching applications. Analysis revealed that approximately 45% of female microlenders who utilised online platforms experienced an increase in available job opportunities compared to those not using such applications. There was a notable trend towards sectors like ICT and hospitality, which were more frequently advertised through these applications. Online job-matching applications have the potential to enhance employment opportunities for female microlenders in Kigali by providing them with access to diverse job listings. However, further research is needed to identify specific barriers or facilitators within this demographic that could impact their success in leveraging these platforms effectively. Future studies should investigate the role of digital literacy training programmes and policy interventions aimed at improving the utilization of online job-matching applications by female microlenders. Model estimation used $\hat{\theta}=argmin_{\theta}\sum_i\ell(y_i,f_\theta(x_i))+\lambda\lVert\theta\rVert_2^2$, with performance evaluated using out-of-sample error.
