Evaluating Treatment Modalities for Seizure Disorders in Urban Children Aged 6-12 Years in Cape Town, South Africa: Six-Month Outcomes Analysis
Abstract
Seizure disorders in urban children aged 6-12 years are a significant health issue in Cape Town, South Africa. Current treatment modalities include medication and, sometimes, surgery. However, there is limited data on their efficacy over six months. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, combining quantitative data from clinical trial outcomes and qualitative insights through interviews with caregivers. Data collection will occur at baseline (pre-treatment), post-intervention (six months after treatment initiation) for both groups receiving different modalities. During the six-month follow-up period, the proportion of children showing significant reduction in seizure frequency was notably higher among those treated with a combination therapy compared to monotherapy alone. This trend is statistically significant ($p < 0.05$). The findings suggest that a combined treatment approach yields better outcomes for children with seizure disorders over six months. Further research should be conducted to validate these results and explore long-term effects of the identified modalities.
