African Universities' Role in Knowledge Production and Dissemination: A Study of Kenya's Experience
Abstract
African universities play a crucial role in knowledge production and dissemination across various fields of study, including African Studies. In Kenya, these institutions have contributed significantly to the body of knowledge on their continent's history, culture, and development. This qualitative study employed a comprehensive review of academic publications, conference proceedings, and institutional records from Kenyan universities over the years -. The analysis focused on identifying thematic areas of research interest and evaluating the dissemination channels used by these institutions. A significant proportion (36%) of the reviewed literature emphasised historical studies, with a notable theme being the impact of colonialism on contemporary African societies. A recurring finding was the use of digital platforms for knowledge sharing, which increased outreach to diverse audiences. Kenyan universities have made substantial contributions to the body of knowledge in African Studies through various research initiatives and dissemination channels. The findings highlight the importance of historical studies and the growing adoption of digital communication methods. Future research should continue to explore how universities can enhance collaboration between scholars, promote interdisciplinary approaches, and leverage technological advancements for broader impact.
