Community Health Worker Training Impact on Diabetes Management in South African Townships, 2009
Abstract
The prevalence of diabetes in South African townships is alarming, highlighting a critical need for effective community-based interventions. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including baseline surveys, CHW training programmes, follow-up assessments, and qualitative interviews to assess changes in knowledge, practice, and patient adherence to treatment protocols. CHWs reported a significant increase (p < 0.05) in diabetes management practices among their patients compared to pre-training levels, with improvements noted in monitoring blood glucose levels and administering insulin injections. Training CHWs has led to enhanced diabetes management outcomes among township residents, particularly in patient adherence to treatment regimens. Further training programmes should be scaled up with ongoing support to maintain these positive changes in diabetes management practices. Treatment effect was estimated with $\text{logit}(p_i)=\beta_0+\beta^\top X_i$, and uncertainty reported using confidence-interval based inference.
