Abstract

Sovereign Connections examines the challenges and opportunities for aligning large firm capacities with South African Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), a critical issue in fostering inclusive economic growth. This commentary employs a qualitative approach to analyse existing literature and case studies, synthesizing insights from various sectors in South Africa. The commentary underscores the importance of fostering a collaborative environment where both large firms and SMEs can contribute to economic growth, emphasising the need for policy support to facilitate these connections. Policy recommendations include establishing dedicated funding mechanisms for capacity-building projects targeting SMEs, promoting inter-firm collaboration through matchmaking events, and enhancing access to finance for SMEs.
