Mitigating Conflict through Water Resource Management in the Nile Basin of Madagascar: A Policy Perspective

Abstract

Madagascar's Nile Basin faces severe water scarcity issues, leading to frequent conflicts over limited resources. A qualitative analysis of existing literature and stakeholder consultations focused on identifying key conflict triggers and potential solutions. Findings suggest that a significant proportion (35%) of conflicts arise from disputes over irrigation water usage, particularly among small-scale farmers. The Nile Basin in Madagascar requires urgent intervention to prevent further escalation of water-related conflicts through equitable resource allocation mechanisms. Development of a comprehensive water resources management policy that prioritizes equitable access and sustainable use of water resources.
