Abstract

The adoption of sustainable agriculture extension programmes among smallholder farmers in Mozambique's rural drylands is critical for enhancing food security and environmental sustainability. This study employed a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative interviews with quantitative surveys to gather data from over 150 smallholder farmers in Mozambique's rural drylands A notable theme emerged regarding the importance of community-based training sessions for effective programme uptake, with a proportion of 64% of surveyed farmers attributing their adoption to such programmes. The analysis reveals that tailored extension strategies are essential for fostering farmer engagement and sustainable agricultural practices in Mozambique’s rural drylands. Implementing community-led training initiatives is recommended as a key strategy to improve the efficacy of future sustainable agriculture extension programmes in Mozambique.
