Sustainable Development Dynamics in Nigerian Law: A Jurisprudential Analysis
Abstract
Sustainable development in Nigeria is increasingly recognised as a critical area for legal reform to address environmental degradation and social inequality. This analysis employs a jurisprudential approach, drawing from case studies and scholarly literature to assess current laws and suggest improvements for aligning them with global best practices in sustainable development. Key themes identified include the need for stronger enforcement mechanisms and integration of traditional ecological knowledge into legal systems to promote sustainable land use practices among communities. While existing laws are robust, their implementation is hindered by gaps in governance structures and lack of community engagement. Recommendations aim to bridge these gaps through legislative amendments and public education initiatives. Recommendations include strengthening enforcement bodies, integrating traditional ecological knowledge into legal systems, and implementing participatory planning processes with local communities.
