Abstract

The informal sector in urban Togo plays a significant role in employment and economic activity, despite its often marginalized legal status. Qualitative research methods were employed to gather insights from local stakeholders including community leaders, business owners, and government officials. The informal sector in urban Togo accounts for approximately 40% of the city’s employment and generates about $15 million annually, highlighting its economic importance. Current governance mechanisms are insufficient to provide legal recognition and support to the informal sector, leading to exploitation and inequality. Implement a legal framework that recognizes the rights and responsibilities of informal sector workers, alongside capacity-building programmes for regulatory enforcement.
