Community Mobilization Strategies in Arid Kenyan Drylands: A Qualitative Study on Water Conservation Efforts
Abstract
Arid Kenyan drylands face significant water scarcity challenges, exacerbated by climate change. Community mobilization strategies are crucial for effective water conservation efforts. This study employed a qualitative research approach, involving semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders, focus group discussions, and document analysis from four key communities. The data were analysed using thematic content analysis to identify common themes and strategies. Community mobilization efforts in the studied regions demonstrated significant success in water conservation through targeted interventions such as rainwater harvesting systems and soil moisture management practices. For instance, one community saw a 40% increase in sustainable groundwater recharge over three years. The study highlights effective strategies for enhancing water resource management in arid environments, emphasising the importance of community participation and tailored solutions. Governments should support ongoing community initiatives by providing technical assistance, financial incentives, and strengthening policy frameworks to ensure long-term sustainability.
