The Legal Landscape of Refugees and Asylum Seekers in East Africa: An Analysis for Togo Context

Abstract
The region of East Africa is a focal point for global refugee resettlement due to conflict and humanitarian crises, with Togo facing challenges in integrating these populations into its legal system. A mixed-methods approach combining legal research with qualitative data from interviews with local NGOs and governmental officials to assess compliance and recommendations for policy reform. The current legal status of refugees and asylum seekers in East Africa, as exemplified by Togo’s policies, often leads to inadequate protection measures and administrative delays, highlighting the need for streamlined procedures and increased public awareness campaigns. This analysis underscores the necessity for more robust legislation and improved implementation strategies to ensure fair treatment and integration of refugees within Togolese legal frameworks. The government should expedite policy reforms to align with international standards, enhance coordination between governmental agencies, and improve public education programmes regarding refugee rights and responsibilities.
