Abstract

The legal landscape of refugees and asylum seekers in East Africa is complex, with varying policies across different countries. Seychelles, as a small island nation, has its own unique challenges in managing these populations. The analysis is based on existing laws, regulations, and case law related to refugee status determination processes in Seychelles. Interviews with stakeholders, including government officials and non-governmental organizations, were also conducted to gather insights into practical challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers. The current legal framework in Seychelles leaves much room for improvement, particularly in terms of procedural fairness and application clarity for refugees and asylum seekers. Recommendations include enhancing judicial oversight over refugee status determinations, improving the accuracy of eligibility criteria, and providing more support services to assist applicants throughout their process.
