Abstract

Sustainable Livelihoods Programmes (SLPs) are critical in addressing poverty and inequality among youth in Cape Town’s gang communities. A mixed-method approach combining qualitative interviews with quantitative surveys to evaluate programme impact and participant satisfaction. Participants reported a significant increase (35%) in income from participating in SLPs, indicating positive economic outcomes. SLPs have the potential to reduce youth engagement in criminal activities by providing viable alternative pathways for livelihood development. Investment should focus on enhancing programme sustainability and scalability to reach more South African communities.
