Youth Identity and Political Participation in Urban Angola: A Qualitative Exploration
Abstract
Youth in urban Angola are a significant demographic for political participation, yet their role is underexplored within African studies. A qualitative exploration was conducted through semi-structured interviews with young people aged 18-25, focusing on their perceptions of national identity and participation in local politics. Interviews revealed that a majority (60%) of participants identified strongly with their country's youth movements, which played a crucial role in shaping their political views. These groups often advocated for socio-economic reforms and democratic governance. Youth identity is pivotal in urban Angola, influencing their participation in local politics. The study highlights the importance of understanding generational dynamics in shaping public policy and civic engagement. Policy-makers should consider engaging with youth-led organizations to foster inclusive political processes that reflect diverse community voices.
