Implementing Community Health Worker Programmes to Reduce Maternal Mortality in Kigali District, Rwanda
Abstract
Maternal mortality is a significant public health issue in Rwanda, with Kigali District facing high rates. A comprehensive search of peer-reviewed journals was conducted using databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar. Inclusion criteria were studies published between and the present focusing on CHW programmes and their impact on maternal mortality rates in Kigali District. CHW programmes showed a statistically significant reduction in maternal mortality rates (p < 0.01) with an estimated mean decrease of 34% over two years. Community Health Worker programmes are effective in reducing maternal mortality rates, warranting further implementation and evaluation in other regions of Rwanda. Investment in training, supervision, and support for CHWs is recommended to sustain the benefits observed. Additionally, replication studies with larger sample sizes should be conducted. Treatment effect was estimated with $\text{logit}(p_i)=\beta_0+\beta^\top X_i$, and uncertainty reported using confidence-interval based inference.
