Abstract

Cape Verde, a small island nation in the Atlantic Ocean, has a rich cultural heritage that includes libraries and archives containing significant African intellectual material. Qualitative research methods were employed, including interviews with librarians and archivists, archival records analysis, and participant observation at cultural events. A key finding is that the proportion of African intellectual material in Cape Verde's archives is significantly higher than in neighboring countries, indicating a unique preservation effort. Libraries and archives play a crucial role in preserving African intellectual heritage in Cape Verde, with notable efforts to document and protect this cultural wealth. Further research should focus on the sustainability of these preservation initiatives and potential collaborations between libraries, universities, and local communities.
