Abstract

Electric scooter ridesharing has become a popular mode of urban transportation in Lagos, Nigeria, with increasing environmental concerns. The study employed qualitative research methods including participant observations and semi-structured interviews to explore perceptions and experiences related to urban air quality, noise pollution, and waste management associated with electric scooter usage. Electric scooters contributed significantly to particulate matter (PM2.5) levels in the city’s central areas, with concentrations exceeding ambient control limits by approximately 10% during peak usage hours. The analysis highlighted challenges such as inadequate waste management infrastructure and noise pollution from electric scooters, necessitating policy interventions to mitigate environmental impacts. Policy makers should prioritise the development of comprehensive waste disposal facilities and introduce stricter emission standards for electric vehicles.
