Preserving Digital Cultural Heritage in Resource-Limited Environments: A Ghanaian Perspective
Abstract
Digital cultural heritage preservation is increasingly critical in resource-limited environments due to the rapid digitization of traditional knowledge and cultural artifacts. A qualitative approach was employed through interviews with local archivists and surveys among cultural institutions to assess preservation practices and needs. Findings indicate that the majority of archival materials are stored locally but suffer from technical issues such as outdated software systems, leading to data loss or inaccessibility. Community support is crucial for sustainable digital preservation efforts. The study highlights a need for technological upgrades and community involvement to ensure long-term accessibility of digital cultural heritage in Ghanaian settings. Recommendations include the development of local capacity building programmes, collaboration with international partners, and investment in robust data management systems.
