Translating African Literature: Challenges and Strategies in Senegal's Context

Translating African literature into global languages poses unique challenges due to cultural differences and language nuances. Qualitative interviews were conducted with translators, scholars, and publishers to understand the issues and propose solutions. Translators often struggle with maintaining the authentic voice and cultural integrity of the original text, particularly in conveying subtle metaphors and humor. While challenges persist, specific strategies such as using glossaries for idiomatic expressions and conducting collaborative workshops have been identified. Developing a standardised glossary for common African literary terms and organising regular translation workshops can enhance the quality of translated works.
