Climate Change and Human Security in the Sahel: An African Perspective on Nigeria
Abstract
The Sahel region in Nigeria is facing significant climate change impacts that threaten human security. A qualitative study involving interviews and focus groups with local communities and government officials. Roughly half of respondents reported increased frequency of droughts and floods over the past decade, leading to food insecurity and displacement. Climate change exacerbates existing vulnerabilities among Sahelian populations in Nigeria, particularly affecting women and children who rely on agriculture for livelihoods. Implement early warning systems, enhance agricultural resilience programmes, and increase access to climate-related social safety nets.
