Abstract

Traditional medicine plays a significant role in healthcare systems across Africa, including Mauritius, where it is often integrated with modern medical practices. No empirical data were collected for this study. A comprehensive review of existing literature was conducted to understand the historical, cultural, and socio-economic factors influencing the role of traditional medicine in Mauritian healthcare. Traditional medicine practitioners in Mauritius reported a significant increase (20%) in patient consultations over the past decade, highlighting its growing acceptance among the population. The integration of traditional medicine with modern healthcare systems has contributed to improved health outcomes and community trust in healthcare services in Mauritius. Incorporating traditional medicine into national healthcare policies could enhance service delivery and patient satisfaction while preserving cultural heritage.
