Pan-Africanism in Egypt: Challenges and Opportunities in the Early Twenty-first Century
Abstract
Pan-Africanism has been a significant force in African political discourse over the past century, with Egypt playing a pivotal role as it navigates its national identity within a broader continental context. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of Egyptian citizens, including academics, activists, government officials, and community leaders. Qualitative content analysis was employed to interpret interview transcripts and other relevant documents. Pan-Africanism in Egypt is often associated with themes of cultural revival and unity among African diaspora communities, but faces significant challenges related to economic disparity and political instability. Despite these obstacles, there are indications that Pan-Africanist movements have a strong presence online, where they can engage more effectively with younger generations. The findings suggest that while Egypt's engagement with Pan-Africanism is multifaceted, it remains fragmented due to internal conflicts and external pressures. However, the observed digital activism could be harnessed as a platform for promoting Pan-Africanist values in future efforts. To foster more robust Pan-Africanist initiatives within Egypt, there should be greater investment in community-based projects that bridge cultural divides, and enhanced collaboration between local organizations and international partners who share similar goals.
