Youth Identity and Political Engagement in Moroccan Urban Spaces: An Action Research Study

Abstract

Youth in Morocco face challenges related to identity formation and political engagement within urban contexts. An action research study was conducted through participatory methods including focus groups, interviews, and community observations among young people aged 18-25 in urban areas of Casablanca. In the qualitative analysis, youth articulated a sense of marginalization but also identified potential for collective action, particularly regarding social inequalities and environmental issues. Themes emerged around perceptions of political efficacy and trust in institutions. Youth in Moroccan urban spaces exhibit diverse identities that influence their political engagement, highlighting both challenges and opportunities for civic participation. Policy makers should consider youth aspirations and the role of leadership within communities to foster inclusive governance structures.
