Adapting Community Participation Programmes for Plastic Recycling in Mogadishu, Ethiopia: Rates and Financial Outcomes Over One Year

Abstract
Community participation in waste management programmes is increasingly recognised as a crucial strategy for addressing environmental challenges, particularly plastic pollution. The study employed quantitative data collection methods via structured questionnaires distributed among participants involved in the programmes. A total of 235 respondents participated, with a significant proportion (78%) reporting increased recycling rates post-programme implementation. Community engagement significantly boosts plastic recycling efforts and leads to positive economic outcomes for participating communities. Further research should explore scalability and sustainability strategies for these community-based initiatives in similar contexts. plastic recycling, community participation, Mogadishu, waste management
