The Sahel's Pivot to Climate Security: Perspectives on Human Security in Chad
Abstract
The Sahel region faces significant climate variability, which has profound implications for human security in Chad. A qualitative study employing semi-structured interviews to gather perspectives from local communities, government officials, and NGOs on climate-induced vulnerabilities affecting human security. Local farmers reported a 15% reduction in crop yield due to erratic rainfall patterns, leading to increased food insecurity across the Sahel region of Chad. Climate change exacerbates existing vulnerabilities, particularly among vulnerable populations such as rural farmers and pastoralists in Chad's Sahel zone. Enhanced climate forecasting systems coupled with targeted agricultural support programmes are recommended to mitigate climate-induced human security risks.
