Abstract
South African townships face significant challenges in terms of employment opportunities and poverty alleviation. Youth empowerment projects have been implemented to address these issues, but their effectiveness remains under-researched. The study employed participant observation and in-depth interviews with stakeholders including project beneficiaries, project managers, and local community leaders to gather qualitative data. Findings indicate that while some projects have successfully created additional job opportunities for youths, the overall impact on reducing poverty is modest but significant in certain areas where employment growth was substantial. The analysis suggests a nuanced understanding of how different elements within youth empowerment projects influence economic outcomes and highlights the need for tailored interventions. Recommendations include the development of more targeted support systems that align with specific community needs, enhanced evaluation methodologies to track progress, and increased collaboration between government agencies and non-profit organizations.
