Abstract

Urban youth in Dar es Salaam face significant challenges related to crime prevention due to factors such as poverty, lack of education, and social marginalization. A qualitative study design was employed to collect data through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with participants, programme implementers, and community leaders. Findings suggest that empowerment programmes led to a positive shift in attitudes towards crime prevention, where participants reported increased self-efficacy and community-based support networks were established. The findings indicate that targeted youth empowerment initiatives can play a crucial role in fostering safer communities by enhancing adolescents' resilience against criminal activities. Programmes should focus on integrating sustainable livelihood opportunities and mentorship programmes to further enhance their impact on crime prevention.
