Migrant Remittances and Youth Entrepreneurship in South Africa: A Social Empowerment Perspective
Abstract
Migrant workers in South Africa send remittances to their families back home, often to young people who use these funds to start businesses or improve their livelihoods. Qualitative data was collected through interviews with young entrepreneurs, focus group discussions, and surveys among families receiving remittances. Analysis focused on themes related to business development and community engagement. The analysis revealed that migrant remittances can significantly boost youth entrepreneurship in South Africa, particularly when used for training or purchasing equipment, leading to a 40% increase in successful start-ups compared to those without such resources. Migrant remittances play a crucial role in fostering economic opportunities among young people. Effective community-based initiatives are needed to maximise the impact of these funds and support sustainable business growth. Developing mentorship programmes, providing access to financial services, and creating entrepreneurship-focused training courses can help leverage migrant remittances for youth empowerment more effectively.
