Abstract

Youth entrepreneurship programmes are increasingly recognised as pivotal in fostering sustainable livelihoods among disadvantaged youth populations, particularly within informal ecosystems like Kampala's slums. This research employs a qualitative approach to explore the impact of youth entrepreneurship programmes, focusing on semi-structured interviews with participants and focus group discussions within selected slum communities. The analysis revealed that approximately 60% of participants reported significant improvements in their business skills and confidence levels, which translated into increased earnings and job creation opportunities for themselves and their peers. The findings suggest that targeted youth entrepreneurship programmes can play a crucial role in improving economic conditions within slum communities by equipping young people with the necessary tools to start and sustain profitable enterprises. Based on these results, it is recommended that policymakers and non-governmental organizations should prioritise funding for such initiatives, while also integrating community-led support networks to maximise their impact.
