Abstract

Transitional justice mechanisms are integral to post-conflict societies like Sierra Leone in their efforts towards peacebuilding and reconciliation. An in-depth qualitative analysis was conducted through semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders including former combatants, civil society representatives, and government officials. Data were analysed using thematic content analysis. Truth commission hearings revealed a significant proportion (75%) of testimonies supported the need for reparations to victims, indicating a growing awareness among survivors about their rights to redress. Transitional justice mechanisms have played a crucial role in fostering peacebuilding and reconciliation efforts in Sierra Leone. However, challenges such as resource allocation and political will continue to hinder full implementation of these processes. Enhanced collaboration between international organizations and local authorities is recommended to ensure equitable distribution of resources for reparations programmes.
